Virginia Veronica Ratusznik, daughter of Bernard and Eleanor Makowski, was born on July 9, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan. She was raised in Hamtramck and graduated from St. Ladislaus High School. It was there she met the love of her life, Mitchell. The high school sweethearts were married almost 50 years before Mitch passed in 2013.
Virgie or Poppy, as she was affectionally called, had many obstacles in life. She managed to become a Registered Nurse, working full-time obtaining a master’s degree while raising 3 very active sons. Virg held many positions and titles in the work force before gaining her favorite title of Grandma.
Mitch and Virg enjoyed traveling. Favorites included Acapulco, Alaska train/cruise, bus trips with their friends from St. Dorothy’s Church and an entire family trip to Disney. She loved going to the casino. Hobbies included ceramics and needlepoint projects. Virginia could be heard cheering on all Detroit sports.
She was extremely proud of their SONshines, Mike, Mark and Marty. As a boy mom, she held the title proudly before it was even a thing.
Grandma attended any special event the grandchildren where involved in. She was easy to find being as vocal as she was. She was not afraid to give the refs a piece of her mind at any rate.
We were blessed to be able to keep her comfortable in her own home during this time. A huge thank you to ALL her caregivers these last several years. You really are a special part of your clients’ lives. We could not have done this without you. Special gratitude to those involved in her last six months and Hospice of Michigan.
