Born in Detroit to the late Max and Florence Mayes, Bill supported his family in everything they did and brought joy and laughter with him wherever he went. Working through the ranks at Chrysler throughout his life, Bill worked in tool and die until retirement. In his free time, Bill and his family traveled together often. Bill’s two greatest loves were of Disney and classic cars. Bill and Janet would drive to Disney World every single year, proudly sporting his collection of Disney t-shirts, visiting every single park and often going on little side vacations on the way to or from Florida. Bill tried to go to Spring Training to watch the Tigers in Lakeland as much as possible and they made other stops as well.
When the family was at home in Michigan, Bill was a baseball and softball coach for 20 years for their kids. Their family cottage in Lewiston was Bill’s home away from home. Both a collector and admirer of classic cars, the Frankenmuth car show every September and the Woodward Dream Cruise were never missed. Bill and Larry would park their lawn chairs on Woodward Avenue to watch it all begin. Bill religiously watched his favorite shows Jeopardy, Law and Order, old westerns and Wheel of Fortune. His kids learned to time what time the commercials would come on for his shows to know when they could call him because he would have to call them back so he wouldn’t miss something important if they tried to call when his shows were going. Later in life, Bill was a proud grandpa; he never missed a dance recital or sports game. Bill never let his smile falter no matter what kind of day he was having; he made a point to know what was going on in his friends and family’s lives. A beloved husband, dad, grandfather, brother, and friend, Bill will be missed dearly.
