Born in Medford, Massachusetts, Al was the son of the late Charles E. Vye and Mary Murray. He graduated from Medford High School and proudly served four years in the United States Navy aboard the USS Arcadia. Following his military service, he earned a degree in Engineering from Bentley in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Shortly after graduation, Al met the love of his life, Carol. Together, they shared more than 54 years of marriage before her passing. In 1975, they moved to Portsmouth, where they raised their four sons and built a lifetime of memories.
Al worked for more than 25 years as a government contractor with SYSCON. Following retirement, he enjoyed working part-time with the Newport Police Department, helping oversee the city's metered parking program. His grandchildren loved stopping by with coffee for Gramp on chilly October evenings.
Known to many simply as “Coach,” Al spent countless years coaching Little League baseball, Pop Warner football, and Portsmouth High School football. Some athletes had the privilege of playing for him from their earliest years through high school. Later, he had the special joy of coaching alongside his own sons. His dedication to Portsmouth's young athletes left a lasting impression on the community & Al's love for New England sports was fierce.
With his sharp wit, gruff exterior, and enormous heart, Al was a master of good-natured ribbing. He was always ready with a quick comeback or a hearty laugh. Those who knew him will forever remember the familiar aroma of his pipe tobacco and his unmistakable sense of humor. If Al was giving you a hard time, chances are it meant he liked you.
Above all, Al's greatest pride and joy were his eight grandchildren.
Al is survived by his four sons and their families: Stephen & and his wife Ronda ; Albert Jr. and his wife, Maxi; James; and William and wife Heather, all Vye's of Portsmouth. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Stephen, Branden, Hunter, Devin, Samantha, Connor, Vivienne, and Maddox Vye; his sister, Jeanne Marison of Peabody, Massachusetts; his brother, Gerry Vye of Andover, Massachusetts and numerous nieces and nephews, he loved dearly.
Services will be held privately by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Al's memory to the Newport Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge #8, 120 Broadway, Newport, RI 02840.
