Clifton E. Butts, age 79, passed away peacefully Monday, October 31, 2022 comforted by his family in the Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center. He was the loving husband of Mary (Gurl) Butts of Barrington, RI to whom he was married for 59 years. He was affectionately known as “Pumpa” by his beloved grandchildren.
Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Clifton and Phyllis (Bragg) Butts, he resided in central Massachusetts most of his life.
A graduate of New Bedford High School, Class of 1961 he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology. A Mechanical Engineer, his career spanned many years beginning at Heald Machine Company, was General Manager at MacNeill Engineering and retired as VP of Engineering from Standex Corporation in 2007.
An avid New England Patriots and Boston Bruins fan, he enjoyed playing golf and a good coffee frappe. He was on the Board of Trustees for Condominium Associations in Ludlow and Millbury. A compassionate, wise and understanding man, his greatest joy was time spent with his family and watching his son’s and then his grandchildren’s sports games.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Mark Butts of Northbridge, MA and Matt Butts and his wife Lisa of Milford, CT; two sisters, Carol Flanagan and her husband Mike, and Eileen Parent; five grandchildren, Nikki Botelho and her husband Jared, Kasey Strenkowski and her husband Ben, Jarrod Butts, Jonathon Butts and his fiancée Julia Ingledue and Madison Butts; and many nieces and nephews.
