Colinan, David of Barrington, formerly of Sarasota, FL and Lincoln, RI passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Ellen Roebuck Colinan. He was the son of Eva Fawley Colinan and Major George H. Colinan, a veteran of both WWI and WWII.
David actively participated in the American War Orphan Network (AWON). He was very young when his father was a casualty of WWII and it had an indelible affect on him. In June of 2014, David travelled to France to visit his father’s grave in Epinal and participated in the memorial services of the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
David was a graduate of Providence Country Day, attended Brown University and was a Navy corpsman during the Korean War. He was passionate about the outdoors. In the summer, when he was not gardening, you could find him sailing on the Narragansett Bay. One of his favorite moments in life was weaving his sunfish around the many Tallships in Newport Harbor during the bicentennial celebration in 1976. In addition, David was an amateur ham radio operator and known as “K1ZVP” for over 60 years and proudly conquered Morse code proficiency.
David was also a running enthusiast. He started running in Lincoln Woods in the early 1970s and became friends with a great group of guys affectionately known by his family as the Lincoln Woods Running Club. They encouraged, supported and taunted each other to show up at 5:30 am every morning. Through the support of this group and The Leukemia & Lymphoma’s Team in Training he ran his first marathon at the age of 60 years. David continued his running and went on to run the Mt Washington Road Race several times with the Lincoln Woods group. In addition to other numerous road races and marathons, he proudly ran the Boston Marathon several times, placing 8th in his age group in 2005.
David leaves three daughters and sons-in-law; Anne and William Dufort of Dublin, OH, Martha and Stephen Ellicott of Barrington, RI and Lynne and David Burke of Barrington, RI, as well as, his grandchildren Bill, Jonathan, Sarah (Jason), Caroline, Kate, Stephanie, Will, Gabrielle and 2 great-grandchildren Lila and Abrielle. David is also survived by his loving companion, Millie Stewart Cozzens of Portsmouth, RI.
A service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 324 E. Main Rd., Portsmouth, RI.
