

Maria was a chef, nurse, educator, mentor, artist, and traveler. She loved the arts, the ocean, and sharing meals with family and friends. She had style, and lived with passion and vigor like nobody else.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Maria graduated from Classical High School in 1960, and Newport Hospital School of Nursing’s RN program in 1963. She went on to Boston College Graduate Nursing Program in 1966 earning a B.S. in Nursing. During this time she was also a private duty nurse at several Boston hospitals and held Head Nurse and supervisory positions at St. John of God Hospital, Allston, Mass. In the mid-sixties, Maria was employed as a Clinical Instructor in Fundamentals of Nursing and Surgical Nursing at Roger Williams Hospital in Providence, RI and as a Clinical Instructor in obstetrical nursing at Framingham Union Hospital.
In 1971, as a volunteer, Maria started teaching gourmet cooking at the Andover/N.Andover, MA, YMCA under Elaine Kent. In 1975, Maria served as Director of Volunteers for Christ Church Nursery for handicapped children. In the late seventies, Maria started teaching gourmet cooking and crafts classes to children and adults at the Department of Community Services in Andover where she was instrumental in establishing and staffing new programs in the department, and organized the first culinary cultural series for the town of Andover. Maria served as owner and chef of “Maria’s Moveable Feast” – a gourmet full-service catering company in Andover for eleven years, and went on to work as a food consultant for commercial establishments and private events. In 1990 she started writing a bimonthly food column for the Andover Townsman. From 1980 to 1998 Maria was a member of the Andover Garden Club where she also served on its board of directors.
Maria returned to the medical field in the late nineties as Director of Nursing Services at United Homes for Children in Merrimac and Dorchester, MA. In 2003-2004 she was Director of Health Services at The International School of Boston. Since moving to RI in the early 2000’s, Maria has been a member of the Bristol Garden Club, Handicraft Club in Providence, and the Providence Art Club.
Maria is survived by Peter Moskos, her husband of 58 years, her sisters, Joanne Hirsch and Laurie Bucci, her daughter, Kristina Garbert, her son, James Moskos, grandchildren, Makenzie and Chase Garbert, and several nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Maria’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 9:30 AM at St. Luke’s Church, 108 Washington Rd, Barrington, RI. All are welcome to attend. Visitation will be held in the church, prior to the mass, from 8:30 AM to 9:15 AM. Interment will be held at Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Blvd, Providence, RI.
