Born in Staten Island, NY, Richard went to Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia at age 10, joining the U.S. Air Force after graduation during WWII. He flew 30 missions over Germany as a B-17 navigator, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1945, he joined Eastern Airlines as a flight attendant and in 1947 met his wife, Elizabeth Markey of NC, also a flight attendant, marrying her in 1948. In 1954, his only child, Pollie Chase Hackett Petrosso was born. In 1985, he retired from Eastern Airlines as a Base Manager after living in New Orleans, New York, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Boston.
