

No one loved life more than Wally Moore!!
He was always positive, optimistic, determined and happy. Every day was considered a gift, and he lived every day to the fullest.
Wally Moore, Jr. was born in Southport, North Carolina on November 17, 1928 to the late A.W. Moore and Sadie Orr Moore. He was a graduate of Southport High School and North Carolina State University, where he received his B.S. degree in Horticulture in 1950. He served as a 1st Lt. in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean Conflict .
Mr. Moore was President/CEO of Southern Distributors and Southern Auto Parts, Inc. Earlier in his career he was President of Martens and Moore Insurance Agency, and American Homeowners Insurance Company. He also managed the family farm in Darnestown, Maryland, where he worked weekends. He owned citrus groves in the Indian River area of Florida and timberlands in Bladen, Pender and Sampson counties, North Carolina and in Morgan County, West Virginia.
Mr. Moore was a busy and successful businessman who suffered a life-changing accident in 2007. Initially paralyzed from a fall, through sheer will and determination he recovered sufficiently to remain active in business and civic affairs. He was a man who did not know the meaning of “it can’t be done.” His optimistic outlook and appreciation for life was an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
Wally was a member of the Board of Trustees of Sibley Memorial Hospital, The Methodist Home, and Wesley Theological Seminary. He served on bank boards for 40 years with institutions that now comprise Wells Fargo Bank. He was an emeritus member of the Investment Committee of the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Mr. Moore was a member of Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church, Congressional Country Club, Columbia Country Club, The University Club and Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served as President of Georgetown Kiwanis Club. He was a member and Potentate of Almas Shrine Temple; Worshipful Master of Temple-Noyes Cathedral Lodge #32; Director of Capital Court #50, Royal Order of Jesters; President of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Jester Courts; Royal Director of the National Court, Royal Order of Jesters; and an honorary 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
He was an avid sportsman, hunter, water skier and conservationist. Wally founded the Orr-Moore Hunting Club. He was honored by the State of West Virginia for donating timberlands, which he maintained in their natural state for the enjoyment of all future generations.
Mr. Moore is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Steuart Moore, of Bethesda, Maryland and two nieces.
After a lengthy illness, which he fought courageously, Wally Moore is at peace and rest.
