Allison Jean Hazen passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023, in Washington, DC. She was born to Walter Andy Hazen II and Martha Jean Jordan Hazen on July 22, 1977, in St. Augustine, Florida. Allison and her brother, Jordan Norman Hazen grew up in St. Augustine and spent their childhoods roaming through the parks, woods, and beaches of St. Johns County collecting shells and learning the names of plants and animals.
Allison attended local schools in St. Augustine and graduated with the class of 1995 from St. Augustine High School. She moved to Washington, DC, after completing a BA degree with highest honors from the University of Florida in 1998.
She was a webmaster by profession and worked for Heldref Publishing Company and Lockheed-Martin as well as various federal agencies. She created web pages for the U.S. Botanical Gardens, the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, the Architect of the Capitol, the U.S. International Trade Commission, the Culinary Historians of Washington, and NASA. While at NASA, she was a featured speaker at the Gilbane OMS Watch Conference on Federal Technology and an invited speaker at the Federal Web Managers’ Conference.
Allison was a member of the Maria Jefferson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Federation of Government Employees.
Her interests were varied. They included foraging, growing, cooking, and plating her own food. She was especially talented at creating unique and beautifully designed platings. Her other hobbies included macro photography, focusing mainly on insects; playing the bass guitar, fencing, and participating in charity poker tournaments. She was a talented lady but would quickly tell anyone that her greatest accomplishment was being a mother to her son, Henry Hazen Janes.
Allison now joins her daddy in heaven who has probably been waiting to play a game of HORSE with her. She always had a good three point shot. Allison leaves behind her husband, David Janes; her precious son; her mother; her brother; her dear friend, Rick Howard; her aunt, Marsena Hawk Smith; her sister in law and brother in law, Beth and Bryan Janes; her nephew, Adam Janes, and cousins, Michael Smith, Angela Greer, Norman, Joey, and Lisa Hazen; Barbara Stephens, and David Hilgendorf. She also leaves behind her cat, Cleo.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday May 6, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Joseph Gawler’s Funeral Home, 5130 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington DC, and a graveside service is planned at Craig Memorial Park in St. Augustine, Florida, at a later date. The family appreciated any donation made in Allison’s name to your favorite charity, or to hers, World Central Kitchen, http://donate.wck.org.
The family also gratefully acknowledges the compassion and expertise of the nurses and doctors at Capital Caring Health.
