Ms. Amy Gwendolyn Black was born on May 17, 1942 to Mabel L. Patterson McMillan and Willie Clifton McMillan in Red Springs, NC. She shared her birthday with her mother, arriving on Mrs. McMillan's 25th birthday. The early years of Amy's life were spent in North Carolina, where she attended and graduated from Red Springs High School. She relocated to Boston shortly thereafter, and ultimately settled there, having developed a childhood bond with her extended family in the area. She was briefly married, and gave birth to her only child in Newark, New Jersey in 1968.
"Gwen," as she was known to many, was a devoted family member and friend to many. Her network extended from North Carolina to the New York area, Boston and as far west as California. She loved music, travel, reading, and the arts. On August 23, 2012 she quietly left this world to be under the watchful eye of God, to whom she had dedicated her life as a child.
She is survived by her only child and son, Mark Stephen Black (New York), her sister Gertrude McMillian (North Carolina), and two brothers John McMillan (New Jersey) and Jimmy Alford (North Carolina).
Relatives and friends are invited to call at Joseph Gawler's Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC on Monday, August 27, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm with funeral services directly following. Thereafter will be a reception from 3:30pm - 6:30pm at 4301 Military Rd, NW, Washington DC.
