Nancy was born on January 9, 1948 in Red Bank, NJ to Charles and Claire Peters. She graduated from Maryville University in St. Louis, MO and spent her earlier, professional career in the Washington D.C. area in the investment business. Nancy worked at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co and Torray LLC where she met her husband Robert “Bob” Torray.
Nancy was passionate about several charitable organizations, including the Make A Wish Foundation, My Sister’s Place, and the DC Central Kitchen, where she served on the Board of Directors and volunteered regularly in the kitchen. Nancy and Bob, her husband of 35 years, spent much of their time in quiet philanthropy, giving generously to individuals and organizations. They sponsored dozens of young people through college, established scholarships and foundations, and picked up the tab for strangers in their favorite restaurants.
Nancy was an avid golfer, traveler, and bridge player, always enjoying the company of dear friends in Washington D.C., Nantucket, MA, and Palm Springs, CA. In recent years, Nancy discovered her love of art; taking classes in painting and drawing, and developing her own practice at home. Her family and friends knew Nancy as a woman of intelligence, inclusion, humor with a bit of snark, and who would be the first to make fun of herself.
Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Diana Blocksidge, and her adoring husband. She is survived by her brother Charles Peters (Dorie), her daughter Tracey West (Michael), son Christopher Peirce (Renee), son Andrew Peirce (Patty), stepdaughters Lynn Thoré, Lisa Banks (Doug) and Kelly Torray-Garcia (Alex), as well as her grandchildren and many friends.
The family will plan a celebration of life for the Spring of 2024.
