

Brian John McManus, aged 83, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, following a prolonged illness. Born on July 15, 1942, in Chicago to Frederick Joseph and Grace Fannelly McManus, Brian's family relocated to Washington D.C. in 1945. He was predeceased by his elder brother, Frederick J. McManus, Jr.
Surviving Brian are his sister, Daria McManus Lowe (Stephen H) Heathsville, Virginia; niece Alexandra Lowe Welch (Devin V); grand-nephew Sagan Vance Welch and grand-niece Vivienne Majette Welch, Charlottesville, Virginia; and nephew Hunter McManus Lowe, Ashburn, Virginia.
A devout Catholic and a member of St. Ann’s parish for 80 years, Brian was educated at St. Ann’s grade school, St Anselm’s Abbey School, Georgetown University, and Georgetown Law School. Post-law school, he served at the Federal Power Commission before joining Reid and Priest, a leading national firm, to represent electric utility companies. In the 1990s, he transitioned to Jones Day and later became associated with Van Ness Feldman, becoming a highly recognized expert in his field. His clientele included prominent electric companies like Southern California Edison, Philadelphia Electric Company, and South Carolina Electric Company.
Brian was a distinguished classical pianist who cherished his grand piano, especially during the covid years, and he was active in several D.C. musical groups. Brian was well-known for his refined fashion sense, appreciation for tradition, exquisite taste in wines, passion for opera, extensive knowledge of English history, and fervent support of the Washington Nationals. He will be remembered by all as an exceptional scholar and gentleman, always ready to share life's joys with friends and family.
Brian’s death leaves a significant void in the lives of his family and numerous friends. A Memorial Mass in honor of Brian will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 4001 Yuma St NW, Washington, DC, on Thursday, September 4th, at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Anselm’s Abbey School, Washington DC.
