Carl was a great man who achieved many accomplishments for the Edison Electric Institute and the electric utility industry.  He will be forever remembered by his many friends in the industry.

Dear Grace,

I first met Carl about 40 years ago at the offices of SM Stoller Company when I joined Con Edison's Research Department and was representing that utility in technical matters relating to energy R&D. That began a long and close working relationship with Carl that grew and flourished over the years. He was the finest professional friend that I worked with in my entire career. He was an accomplished attorney, a brilliant negotiator and respected counselor. He possessed unfailing good judgment,coolness under pressure and an instinct for fair play.
Carl was my most cherished mentor. I had great respect for him and tried to shape my own career by embracing Carl's many virtues. I know my life has been richer for having had the pleasure of his company and his friendship. I am very sad and I will miss him greatly. My dear friend was a very special person!
Grace, Phyllis and I profoundly regret our inability to be with you as Carl is laid to rest but we are with you in spirit and Carl will be in my heart and mind until I take my final breath.

Dear Grace,

When nature permits it, when you live long enough, you inevitably live to bury people who have meant much to you in life.

I met Carl some 50-plus years ago, when I was a nuclear consultant to Con Edison on the Indian Point plant, and Carl was assigned by the LeBoeuf firm, Con Edison’s lawyers, to work on that project. We stayed friends and in close contact, and he was my lawyer when I started my consulting firm in 1959. Our contacts diminished in frequency when Carl and Grace were relocated first to California and then to Washington, but that was only circumstantial – the warmth of our relationship never cooled.

Carl’s virtues, regrettably, are what we have come to think of as old-fashioned. In a time when our sports heroes, our politicians, and it seems the general citizenry as displayed on TV, revels in being loud, foul-mouthed, unfaithful, and dishonest, Carl was 
polite, self-effacing, straight-forward, and altogether dependable.  And he carried those same qualities of mind and character into his personal relationships, and especially they were evident in his devotion to Grace.

Carl was the epitome of what Damon Runyon called a “Gent” – a thoroughly nice guy, and the kind of person we can ill-afford to lose in today’s world. Dante said long ago that there can be no greater grief than to remember days of joy when misery is at hand. Billie and I grieve with Grace, and most sincerely regret that we cannot be with her for this very special occasion.
