Ms. Joy passed peacefully at Sibley Hospital on February 16, 2019.
She is survived by Ellen Mulherin Cooney, numerous nieces & nephews, grand nieces and nephews and is preceded in death by her siblings: William J. Cooney, Mary Cooney Rotchford, John F. Cooney and Jeanne T. Cooney.
Ms. Joy attended Mount St. Joseph High school in Augusta, GA, Immaculata Jr. College in DC, graduating from Trinity College in Washington, DC in 1950. She thoroughly enjoyed a 32 year career at the CIA, formerly known as “the Agency”, creating roots, family, and friends that became family in DC that would span her lifetime.
Ms. Joy was SO appropriately named!! She embodied joyfulness and grace, was an active lover of the arts and supporter of theatre, music, and film. Ms. Joy had a special love for poetry, literature & newspapers, and is the most well-read and well-travelled person we’ve ever known.
Joy could carry on a conversation with anyone, about anything. She was kind, refined, generous, and positive in her elegant spirit. Her knowledge in just about all areas of life was unparalleled, yet she was humble in her genius. She was Google before Google existed.
Joy was asked not too long ago what she’s most proud of in life. She laughed and said she doesn’t usually think about herself much, that she’d have to think about it. With a little encouragement, she replied: My ability to ENJOY life and all of its many blessings.
Joy is, was, and will always be the very definition of JOY. As we said, she was SO very appropriately named.
