Betty attended the District of Columbia Teachers College, where she was a member of Pi Kappa Sigma (now Sigma Kappa), and The American University in Washington, DC.

She enjoyed many interests. During her younger years, she took flying lessons and loved to dance. She found pleasure in cooking, music, traveling with her family, history and genealogy, as well as reading, with a pique interest in biographies and the British Royal Family. She was known for her generosity, kind heart, and her special kindred spirit towards animals. Most of all, she lovingly devoted much of her time and energy to her husband and family.

She is survived by her sister, Elma “Peaches” H. Whatley. Four children; Catherine H. Drosihn, John J. Humphrey, Jr. (Marnie), Carol A. Humphrey, and Mary-Alice Humphrey McKnight (J.C.), of Washington, DC. Grandchildren; Jessica Anderson, Kimberly B. The family of Carol Humphrey would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge her for her unrelenting care of their Mom/Grandmother/Great-Grandmother. Carol gracefully provided full-time care of, and lived with her mother, Betty. During this time, in her duties as the primary caregiver, she watched and helped Betty, through the challenging progression of her Alzheimer’s disease. Carol has dedicated the past eight years to giving back to her mother. Carol carried out her role in the very same understanding, caring, supportive, and unconditional loving manner, in which her mom always gave to her, as well as to all the children in the family. We would like to thank you, Carol, from the bottom of our hearts.

Guests may pay their respects to the family members at Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral Home, 5130 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, 20016. I have a wealth of fond memories of Betty and John in connection with family occasions involving my Aunt and Uncle Doris and Jim Reddington. Today, the bond between the Humphrey/McKnight and Reddington/McPhee families remains as strong as ever -- and for that I am grateful. It's an amazing legacy started by one generation and carried forward by their children and grandchildren. Betty always carried herself with great dignity, a model for us all. Diane

I'm sending all my love to Mary- Alice and Carol and the rest of the family. I remember going to Mary-Alice's house and talking to her mom. She was always so gracious and wanted to know all that was going on with us "kids." My heart broke when I heard the news of her passing. I will never forget the feeling I had whenever I went over to there house. I will never forget how glamorous and gracious Mrs. Humphrey was.
