The first child of Greek immigrants from Sparta, Demetra was a life-long Washingtonian. Her parents Helen and George believed strongly in family, education, duty and they instilled those values deeply in Judy. In every aspect of her life, she lived by that code but she did it in her own way—guided by her passion for democracy and friendship.
A few of her favorite things about her life were her work at People for the American Way, joining the Clinton/Gore campaign in Little Rock in 1992, her daughters, having a sister, her Greek heritage and her friendships.
Judy is survived by her loved and loving family, including her husband Don, her daughters Valerie Green and Melissa Green, her grandchildren, Jacob, Sam and Clara Lieppe and Gus Green; her sister Barbara Alafoginis; her sisters-in-law Marty Alafoginis (wife of her deceased brother Peter) and Joanne Alafoginis (wife of her deceased brother Arty); her nieces and nephews Alicia Everett, Elena and Jacques Pernitz, Kristina and Martin Vedder, Jackie and Mark Vandermeersch, George Peter and Betsy Alafoginis, George Arthur and Kathleen Alafoginis, Frank Alafoginis and Eleni Alafoginis; and her great nieces and nephews Peter, Stella, William, Caroline, Emma, Arthur, Evie and Poppy.
Judy’s funeral will be at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral on January 3, 2023 at 11:00 am preceded by a visitation at 10:00 am. f
May her memory be a blessing.
