

JACOBS EUGENE ROBERT JACOBS, MD, FACR Eugene "Gene" Jacobs, MD, FACR, died peacefully on Monday, October 6, 2014 at his home in Springfield, VA. He was born September 29, 1929, in Brooklyn, NY, the only child of Sylvia Hurwitz Jacobs and Kalman "K.M." Jacobs. He attended Erasmus Hall High School, graduated cum laude from Syracuse University and received his M.D. at SUNY College of Medicine. In 1956, he moved to Philadelphia to begin his internship and residency at Temple University. While there, he was AMA Board Certified in Radiology. Beginning in 1959, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Jay on Governor's Island in New York, until his honorable discharge in 1961. Dr. Jacobs dedicated his professional life to medicine and education. Upon returning to civilian life, he moved to Northern Virginia where he was appointed Chairman of the Radiology Department at National Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Hospital and began a private medical practice. In 1974, he also joined the clinical faculty at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at George Washington University, where he was revered by peers and students. He was honored by his students with election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and authored two widely-used textbooks on the subject of radiology. Dr. Jacobs was elected a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and served in leader- ship roles with a number of other medical societies. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Alexandria Sanitation Authority from 1967 to 1983. In 1997, Eugene was granted the status of Associate Professor Emeritus at George Washington University and took pride in lecturing as a volunteer for many years thereafter. In his later life, Gene continued his lifelong commitment to service as a distinguished member of Rotary International, in both the Rappahannock-Fredericksburg and Springfield clubs. He was made an Honorary Lifetime Member and dedicated more than 16 years of "Service Above Self". Gene was survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Janet Swan Jacobs. He was also greatly loved by his daughter Lori Wise and her husband, Barry Wise, his daughter Susan Buniva and former son-in-law Brian Buniva, stepson David Clements and his wife Teri Clements, and his late stepdaughter LeiAnn Pralle and her widowed husband Michael Pralle. Gene was proud to be called Grandpa by Andrew Pergam and his wife Jenifer Kwan, Oliver Wise and his wife Eleanor Hanson Wise, Michael Pergam and his wife Dr. Sara Silverio Marques, Dr. Emily Buniva Edelson and her husband Dr. Jonathan Edelson, Nathan Buniva, Vanessa Pralle, Andrew Pralle, Christopher Pralle, William Pralle, Dustin Clements and Daniel Clements. He was also great-grandfather to six children: Jude Daniels, Julian Pergam, Louise Wise, Daphne Wise, Evan Edelson, Madeleine Pergam. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 10 at 12 noon at Gawler's Funeral Home in Washington, D.C. Interment will follow at Garden of Remembrance in Clarksburg, Maryland. The family will receive guests at a private home on Friday following interment until 7 p.m., on Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
