Frederick Lawrence Bailey

Fred attended St. John’s College High School in Washington, DC and graduated in 1977. He later attended the University of Maryland and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

While attending school and after graduation he worked at his father’s Certified Public Accounting firm, Bailey & Bailey for several years. Fred left public accounting to work for not-for-profit organizations – the Audubon Naturalist Society (now Nature Forward) and the National Wildlife Federation.

During the past two decades, Fred volunteered at Community Tax Aid, Inc. preparing and reviewing tax returns for low-income individuals and families and teaching volunteer training classes. This year he was awarded the Lifetime Legacy Volunteer Award in recognition of his efforts.

Fred embraced life with a wide variety of passions and an unmistakable enthusiasm. Whether he was volunteering with Boy Scouts Troop 90 on hikes or starry nights at Goshen Scout Reservation, or loudly cheering on the Washington Nationals and Old Glory DC rugby teams, Fred threw himself into the things he loved. Recently, he developed an interest in baking bread. Fred’s bread was the best!

Fred’s ultimate happy place was Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. He cherished his summers and autumns there, spending warm evenings surrounded by the laughter and companionship of his wonderful friends.

Fred was a frequent concert goer for a wide variety of music. He especially loved the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan.

Fred lived in Washington, DC for the last 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 40+ years, Jeanne Bailey, and his son, James Bailey (Fab), brothers George (Beth), Christopher (Mary Kay) and Douglas (Jack) Bailey, and sisters MaryAnn Miller (Bill), Barbara Jenny (Pete) and Jennifer Enters., fourteen nieces and nephews, and a growing number of grand-nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 5949 Western Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20015 on Friday, July 24th, 2026 from 10 AM to 11 AM, followed by a funeral mass.
