Also survived by her sister, Winifred Lumsden. Gerry, as she was known, enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and was a grand supporter of Catholic education and athletics. She and Neil could be spotted regularly at school functions, gymnasiums and ball fields across the D.C. Metro area. Their children attended St. Bernadette School, Mater Dei School, Archbishop Carroll, Georgetown Prep, Holy Redeemer School, Holy Child, Catholic University, Clemson University and Georgetown University. For more than 20 years Gerry and Neil were actively involved with the Connelly School of the Holy Child, where Gerry founded the Neil T. Coakley Scholarship in Neil's honor in 2010. In addition, Gerry was an active volunteer and supporter of the Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind, Christ Child Society, Sodality of our Lady of Mercy and the Shady Grove Pregnancy Center. She and Neil were inseparable as they did virtually everything together. A favorite past time of theirs was hosting friends and family at Redskins games and at their Florida home. During her last few years her strength and perseverance were impressive as she made her way through increasingly complicated health issues. She kept battling back and did so with a strong sense of spirit. Gerry was kind, generous and fun to be around. She had a great sense of humor and could go with the flow. She will be sorely missed by her extended clan and many friends. Family and friends will be received at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac, MD, on Thursday, November 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, November 6 at Our Lady of Mercy, 11 a.m. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Neil T. Coakley Scholarship, Connelly School of the Holy Child, 9029 Bradley Boulevard, Potomac, MD 20854.
