On Thursday July 23 Gertrude Ann Deeds died peacefully in her home in Bethesda Maryland. Mrs. Deeds born Gertrude Ann Price was a native Washingtonian. She is survived by her loving husband Donald and devoted children: Suzanne and David Hillman, Angela Deeds and Dean Steel, Donald Deeds Jr, Jack and Medora Deeds, Louis and Susane Deeds, Nancy and Garth Culham and Michael and Chrissy Deeds; sixteen grandchildren: Ryan, Cara, Justin, Cheryl, Ira, Richard, Barbara, Mernielyn, Zachary, Michael, Katie, Nicky, Kyle, Ali, Drew and Trevor; three great grandchildren: Caitlin, Nick and Alex; sisters and brothers: Bill and Julia Price, Mary Price, Nancy and Bud Schatz and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandson Kevin and her brother Herbert, brothers-in law Joe and Jack and sisters-in-law Peggy, Pat and Mary.
From a young age, Mrs. Deeds was high energy and had a profound sense of purpose. While attending Georgetown Visitation High School, she worked for a US Senator and for the US Army as a code breaker in intelligence. She graduated from Trinity College with a degree in physics and was employed by the National Bureau of Standards.
At age 17, she realized her soul mate and partner for life lived next to her family home in Chevy Chase and had been a lifelong family friend: Donald Deeds. Together, they founded a real estate and property management business. She won multiple awards and was a founding member of the Montgomery County Diamond Club. Their success provided her growing family time to travel almost yearly to her favorite spot on Kaanapali Beach, Maui. She was an avid swimmer, loved books, crossword puzzles, sewing beautiful clothes, needlepoint, and mentoring others. She was a champion for the underdog and considered by many to be one of the brightest minds they have ever known.
In the last years of her life, she never slowed down, refusing to allow chronic illness to dampen her spirit, her sense of self and duty to others. Her children and grandchildren have remained by her side through it all. Viewing will be held at Joseph Gawler's Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC from 4 to 7 on Sunday, July 26. Celebration of the Funeral Mass Monday, July 27 at 11:00 at The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Washington DC followed by Internment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Washington, DC.
