
Gyda K. Winslow, a retired elementary school teacher, died May 9th at The Washington Home, a community hospice in Washington D.C. She was 95. The cause was congestive heart failure, according to her daughter, Linda Winslow, of Washington, with whom she lived for the last few months.
Mrs. Winslow taught for many years in Berkshire County public schools in Massachusetts. She is remembered fondly as a “Favorite Teacher” by former students at Commercial Street School in Adams, MA. She also taught third grade at Cheshire Elementary School in Cheshire, MA. An accomplished artist and poet, she firmly believed in the importance of a well-rounded education that included exposure to the creative arts as well as reading, writing and arithmetic.
A resident of Pittsfield, MA for 65 years, Gyda Katrina Jensen Winslow was born in Greenwich, CT and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1936. She attended Cornell University and graduated in 1940 from Barnard College. Her parents, Marthinus and Anna Jensen, both immigrated to this country from Denmark in the early 1900’s. She was divorced.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by her sons David, also of Washington, and William, of Oxford, PA; her sister, Eleanor Gamble, of Trumbull, CT; two grandchildren, Lexy Haynes of San Diego, CA and Mason Winslow, of Portland, OR; and six nieces and nephews.
