Harriet Konjas Aposporos died on Monday, August 27, 2018. Born in 1936 in the tiny village of Skoura, Greece, she was sent to live with relatives in Kingston, NY, at age 11, along with her brother, to escape the Greek civil war. She went on to marry a CIA officer, travel the world, and live on three continents. She gave her time generously and selflessly to anyone in need—often through her beloved St. George’s church—and her heart was full of love for others.
Harriet was predeceased by her adoring husband, Themistocles G. Aposporos, and her daughter Alexandra. She is survived by three children, George (Sandra), Theodore (Nancy), and Demetra (Mark W. Abbott), and six grandchildren, Michael, Abigail, Caroline, and Eleanor Aposporos, and Helena and Maxwell Abbott. Also surviving are brother Lee Konjas and goddaughter Mary Matthews of Kingston, NY, and lifelong friend Fanoula Mboukouvala of Veria, Greece.
The family will receive friends Thursday, September 6, 5-8 p.m. at Joseph Gawler’s Sons, LLC, 5130 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington DC. Service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, September 7, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 7700 Bradley Blvd, Bethesda. Memorial contributions may be made to St. George’s Feed the Hungry program or Casey House/Montgomery Hospice.
