Dear Martha, Richard and Lisa-
I have just learned of Ira's passing and I am feeling very sad. My heart is very much with you. I cannot begin to recount all the wonderful memories of your family and your magical house on Nantucket. I feel fortunate indeed to have shared life and love and laughter with you. I hope we can talk soon.

Dear Martha, It was with sadness that I read about the loss of your husband and my favorite historian. Professor Berlin’s words were transforming and always thought provoking. I’ve read and re-read his books especially Many Thousands Gone... and discovered something new each time.
I still carry admiration and respect for you from when I supervised the USDA projects for you, so many years ago. You were a tough task master and a true mentor.
So, both distinguished Berlin family members have left a huge impact on my life’s journey. My deepest sympathy and love to you and your family.

Carolyn and I have read with regret, but also with considerable admiration, the prominent obituary in the June 9th New York Times about your dear Ira's outstanding professional achievements. Of course our first and most strongly felt thoughts are of your loss and of his passing, and we hope your family and friends are staying close by. Our professional paths crossed long ago and then separated, but we do want to let you know that we still think of you all and of the child-rearing years when we taught together. The New York Times treated Ira with extraordinary honor, and we still think of you all, and of those Chicago Circle years with fondness.
