

BULGER JAMES CARROLL BULGER, D.D.S., M.D. Surrounded by his devoted family, Dr. James Carroll Bulger, of Rockville, MD, died on Friday, September 23, 2011, at Sibley Memorial Hospital from complications of pneumonia. For 55 years he was the beloved husband of Joan Tierney Bulger; the loving father of Elizabeth (Doug) Ross of Vienna, VA, Kathleen (Russell) Ragland of Vienna, VA, Michele Bulger of Rockville, MD, James (Rachel,deceased) Bulger of Mamaroneck, NY, and Michael (Kathleen) Bulger of Atlanta, GA; and the proud grandfather of Doug, Michael, Tierney, Anna, Kelsey, Joe, Jack and Kate. "Jimmie" was born on March 11, 1929, in Waterbury, Connecticut, the cherished son of Lilly Driscoll and James Carroll Bulger. He graduated with a B.S. degree from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1950, after which he spent one year working at the FBI in Washington DC. He decided to pursue a career in dentistry and received his D.D.S. in 1955 from the University of Maryland Dental School. Thereafter, he served as a Captain in the Dental Corps and was stationed at Mitchel Air Force Base, Long Island, NY. Following his service, he earned his M.D. degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1961 and completed his internship through Chief Residency at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He practiced dentistry in Baltimore from 1957-1965 while in medical school and residency training. He then moved to the Washington, DC area where he practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology for over 40 years. Over the course of his career, Dr. Bulger operated and delivered thousands of babies at seven local and University hospitals with offices in Maryland and DC. He held clinical and academic teaching appointments at Georgetown University Medical and Dental Schools, and George Washington University Medical School. He held leadership positions, including president, in the Washington Gynecological Society and the Washington Medical and Surgical Society. Jim Bulger was a lifelong Baltimore football fan(atic) who loved sports, his Irish heritage, travelling and photography. Along with his love of family and friends, his life's work in medicine was a great source of pride and joy throughout his life. Visitation will be at Gawler's Funeral Home, 5130 Wisconsin Avenue, Washington NW, D.C. 20016, Friday, September 30, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac, MD 20854 at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2011, followed by a reception at Congressional Country Club. There will be a private family interment at a later date.
