James Phillip Hartley

(Age 91)

On Thursday, January 19, 2017, James P. Hartley passed away peacefully at Maplewood Senior Living Center surrounded by family members. Devoted husband of Rosemary Garrett Hartley for 64 years; beloved father to Patrick Hartley (Diane), Mark Hartley (Mary Ellen), Kevin Hartley (Vicki), Mary Hartley, Laurie Hartley Morse (Mike) and Charles Hartley (Megan); and wonderful grandfather to 12 grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Colin, Conner, Brooke, Grace, Tricia, Elise, Katie, James, Kevin, and Theresa. He also had many extended family members and friends.

Dr. Hartley was a 1952 graduate of Duke Medical School where he met the love of his life, Rosemary. He completed his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Hartley had the happiest of careers, practicing in the Washington, DC metro area for many years. Jim and Rosemary were parishioners at Little Flower parish for over 50 years. He often attended daily Mass, and upon his retirement he volunteered at several medical clinics and served as an Arimathean and a money counter at his Church. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his 50+ years of dedication to Little Flower School, Church and Community. His faith was central to his life and was reflected in all of his interactions. Jim served in the U.S. Army in World War II and achieved a battlefield commission rank of Second Lieutenant. His favorite holiday was the Fourth of July. He was most proud of his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Little Flower Catholic Church, 5607 Massachusetts Ave., Bethesda, MD on Thursday, January 26. Family and friends are welcome to a visitation at the Church from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon and the Celebration of Life Mass at 12 noon. Interment will follow at St. Gabriels' Catholic Cemetery in Potomac, Maryland.
