
James Gregory Kane M.D., devoted husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully on February 26, 2024 at the age of 83. He was born in Baltimore on July 5, 1940 the son of Beatrice Boyle and James Gregory Kane.
Dr. Kane is survived by wife of 57 years Elizabeth Alida Ellis Kane, his children Chris Kane (Heidi Kane), Kate Kane, Erin Burke and Suzanne Kane (Jake Williams) and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Michael Kane and Steven Renehan. His beloved older sister Avery Glize Kane of Cannes, France predeceased him at age 76 in 2016.
Dr. Kane was an internist with a specialty in infectious diseases practicing in Washington, DC and Bethesda, MD. He was affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Johns Hopkins Medicine-Sibley Memorial Hospital. He received his medical degree in 1968 from University of Maryland School of Medicine and had been in private practice in the area for more than 40 years prior to his retirement. Prior to Medical School he graduated from Loyola College and served in the United States Army. After medical school and before going into private practice he served as a Peace Corps doctor in West Africa based in The Gambia. As a physician he was highly regarded by his medical peers as well those he had mentored. Attesting to the respect he enjoyed in the medical community was the large number of other doctors who ended up in his waiting room as patients.
Visitation with family will be held at Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral Home at 5130 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington DC 20016 on March 7 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday March 8th at 11 AM at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20015. In lieu of flowers donations in his name may be made to Friendship Place, 4713 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20016 and SOME, 71 O St. NW, Washington DC 20001.
