I am saddened to hear of the passing of Jane Wallace. She was one of my heroes at the USGS. She was a champion of women in science. In the late 1980s, she was very supportive of engaging USGS retirees to serve as docents in the new USGS National Center Visitors Center. Jane kept an eagle-eye on how retired leaders from Mapping, Geology and Water Resources Divisions were doing as tour leaders. When Jane learned a manager was receiving a DOI Award for the Visitors Center operation, she did not think that was fair as that person oversaw, rather than did the work of building the program. She conspired with Rupe Southard (former Chief of Topographic Division) and Joe Cragwall (former Chief of Water Resources Division) to create the USGS Public Service Award. For more than 20 years, this award recognized employees who exemplified the very best in Public Service, just as Jane did.
