Janice Bernhard Phalen (born December 14, 1943 died June 26, 2022) passed away at JSSA Hospice at Carriage Hill of Bethesda. Ms. Phalen was a lifelong Washingtonian. She married James Robert Phalen on September 18th, 1971 after meeting at the Office of Economic Opportunity, and were married for 34 wonderful years. She was born at the original Walter Reed Hospital, as her father was in the medical core of the United States Army. Her parents, James Walter Bernhard and Louise Andre Bernhard were also longtime Washingtonians. Ms. Phalen worked for the federal government like her younger sister, Marcia Bernhard Carlson, for nearly 38 years before retiring in 2004. Ms. Phalen is survived by her son Christopher James Phalen of Washington DC. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at the All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase, MD at 11 AM with a reception to follow at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, MD, at 1 PM.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Ms. Phalen’s name to the Hydrocephalous Association or the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.
