One of the finest men I've ever had the pleasure to know, My deepest sympathies and heartfelt loss to all John's family and friends

I was a first time soccer coach some years back for a newly formed team of four year olds that included my son Ben and John Vincent Culver.  Early in the season, imposing Dad John Chester Culver pulled me aside for a brief word.  A paraphrase of Father John's message to me that morning: "I don't care what training methods you employ.  The only thing I do care about is that you WIN!"  We both laughed at the absurdity of the comment for players so young, and I had my introduction to John's enduring wit, evidenced many times over the ensuing years.

If you haven't already seen it, look online for the Boston Globe obit with the picture of John in 1953 football action, slashing through Yale's defense, body perfectly angled, knee defiantly high, end zone in his immediate future.  Not someone you would want to try to tackle.

My sincere condolences to the family on their loss.
