john making me catch him as a YOUNG teenager throwing curves , fastballs etc. that i  could barely see coming  and throwing me  60 to 70 yard perfect spirals that i probably dropped  then getting yelled at !!! he could out JOAN anybody ,   my favorite was  yea  you are right and the rest of the world is wrong .     john is missed .

As a youngster in the Palisades area from the late 50s on, I and others idolized John.  Many of us loved baseball and learned that John, a local guy who had starred in baseball at Western High, had actually signed to play with the Cleveland Indians as a lefthanded pitcher.  Shortly into his minor league play he suffered arm trouble which unfortunately ended his baseball career.  But to us he was still a hero.  He came to the park often and would tell us about his baseball experiences.  He let us catch his pitching which he was careful not too throw too hard.  But boy, was it tough to catch his curve ball !!!  And he hit us fly balls so high they were tough to see and catch.  But the more we tried the better we got.  And I played in the Saturday touch football games too.  He threw me a pass once almost the length of the field.  So so high - I was open and it hit me in the hands with a heavy thud and I dropped it.  Going back to the huddle he yelled at me, "Tehaan, you shoulda caught it!".  John was a friend and an important part of the Palisades area for a long time.  I'm saddened and will miss him and will remember him.  R.I.P. John Gould ...

Johnny was one of the lads from the neighborhood. I knew him to be mostly quiet and reserved, kept his own council, and was independent. He sure did like to play sports. In my high school days, every Sunday in the good weather, there was a pickup game at Palisades of one handed touch football. When Johnny was there, he was always one of the quarterbacks. He could always place the ball in someone's hands, it was up to them not to drop the ball. My best memory is of a guy rushing the quarterback, in this case Johnny, and him spinning and dodging and never being tagged. He couldn’t be tagged before tossing the ball. He frustrated any rusher and made everyone else laugh.
