I just read about Sandy's passing away. Sandy taught me Basic Design Theory at ACL in 1990. He was a tough teacher but fair. It was next to impossible to get an A in his class and I held my B+ against him for years. But as years passed by and the lessons I learnt from his class made me thank him for the B+. 
I'll never forget Sandy for always pushing me and others to do out best but also knowing that our best doesn't mean "great" - you have  to present work PERFECTLY and that is a lesson I still practise everyday in my business.
Thank you Sandy. I'll never forget you. Thank you not giving me an A.

Sandy was one of the very few teachers I fondly remember from my time in the American College in London and the only one I've wondered about occasionally. We got off on the right foot when students were making excuses for delivering late homework and I let him know I wouldn't be doing two of the home works he required as not only did it make an absolute mess in my rented house, but I also had plenty experience painting smoothly with paint spray and gluing stuff together. I'd face up to whatever grade he decided to give me by not doing the work. He appreciated my honesty so much he didn't actually bump down my grade at the end of the semester. I later got some of that honesty handed back to me in painting class as he told me my paintings were very "cornball". His word. He made me try harder and I was much better for it. I improved exponentially with his raw criticism. I also remember his great descriptions of famous paintings and his repeated joke "You know why that's a great painting?" Blank stares all around "Because it has a dog in it!". What a great human being. My sincerest condolences to his family.

Sandy Sempliner taught me both Color Theory and Basic Principles of Design at the ACL in London.   He was a teacher with integrity and a high benchmark.  I loved his dry sense of humor and still remember his instructions on how to use an exacto knife.  Because I was repeating this story to my teens, I decided to "Google" Sandy and found his obituary.  My sincere condolences to Lorraine.  The world will miss him, but I will never forget his indelible influence in my life.

I went to University School, connected with the U of M, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with Sandy Sempliner, when we were both in about ninth and tenth grades....say 1966,67 when Ann Arbor was the Hippie,counter- culture headquarters of the US east of California. Despite the dirt and strange attire and weird habits, and smell---lets face it, hippies were never that clean... that accompanied the great unwashed of the hippies, Sandy was not going for it....he dressed to the nines. Though U High was a private school, very few students would dress up, outside of some of the 'keeping up with the Jones's' girls....But Sandy was a real exception...ties to school, often sports coats, sometimes suits...and NOT dark suits, usually something upbeat and bright. He was a live wire, smart, voluable, opiniated, but not insulting or demeaning. He would often like to pick the teacher's brains, when the rest of us wanted to 'just get the damn class over with'. He lived for awhile right on campus, in the old headquarters for the old U of M secret society, Michigauama.........Sandy was a fun guy...he took some teasing because he often seemed like a round peg in a square hole, but he took it in jest, he was quick witted and able to give better than he got. Long hair, but not a hippie...more like some young movie star. A real original. I regret that I have not seen him in eons.

I have incredibly fond memories of Sandy from when he was my incredibly inspiring  art teacher . He was always such fun and a kind and loving person. A true gentleman. Lorraine my deepest condolences. Sandy, you will always remain in my heart .

He was a wonderful teacher who gave me, and many others the best possible introduction to London and Art. So sad to hear of his passing.  Thank you, Sandy.

Sandy was a wonderful teacher. I am glad to have met him at the age of 20 when I studied in London. I think the fact that he believed in my potential really made all the difference at that time. My condolences to Lorraine, whom I met at a barbecue back then.

I arrived in London with my Mom several years back and Sandy took us to the Chelsea Arts Club. My Mom had such a wonderful time she didn't want to go home. Sandy said she was the only woman who could tire him out. She was a party girl. I know Mom will show Sandy a good time in heaven.

So many good memories of Sandy. The one that stands out is our dive weekend on Pulau Weh, Indonesia. Such a wonderful time. Sandy will be missed.
