Dr. Joseph V. Collea of Cornelius, NC, formerly of Potomac, MD, passed away on June 3, 2022 in Huntersville, NC. Joseph is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret; three devoted daughters: Amy Schaefer, Lisa Collea, MD and Jennie Billman; and eight loving grandchildren.
A native of Utica, NY, Joseph was the son of Anthony and Jennie (Recupero) Collea. He is survived by his brother, Louis and his sisters, Nancy and Bernadette. His brothers Anthony and Carmen predeceased him.
Joseph was a 1958 graduate of Thomas R. Proctor HS and received his Bachelor’s degree in 1963 from Hamilton College. In 1966, he earned his Doctor of Medicine from SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. He completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident from 1971-1972. He was a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam War, and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan from 1972-1974. Joseph completed a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at LA County-USC Medical Center from 1974-1976. In 1979, he began a prestigious 32-year medical and teaching career as Professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. He was the recipient of multiple professional recognitions and authored numerous renowned publications in his medical field.
