As a private in the US Army I had the incredible good fortune to be assigned as a research assistant at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research ( WRAIR) where I was assigned to the Department of Surgery and had to the opportunity to work for several surgeons including Captain ( Dr) Giordano - later Major Giordano (he allowed a few of us lowly enlisted men to take him out for a beer to celebrate - we all loved him) .  He was great to work for and was always generous with his time to teach and explain.  He became a valuable mentor to me, insisting that, in spite of my undistinguished undergraduate record, I should apply to medical school, and writing me letters of recommendation and making phone calls.  I have no doubt that without his intervention I would not have gotten into medical school. Then, a few years later as I was finishing my internship and looking for a residency spot in surgery I called at him at GW University and he said “we have a spot and it’s yours”.  I spent the next 5 years again working for Dr Giordano who continued to be a role model for how to be a good doctor and a good surgeon.  I cannot overstate how important he was in my life, and I know I speak for the other surgical residents he trained over the years at GW

Dr Giordano was my medical school advisor for 4th year at GWU (MD Class of 1982). I still remember his warmth, kindness, encouragement and advice. I hope my career honored his work in starting it going.
