Kevin was my friend for for 60 years, beginning at the NY World Telegram & Sun, the best of the three afternoon newspapers. Kevin was one of three new reporters and I wan an assistant city editor. The city editor pulled me aside one day to ask which of the three should be assigned to cover television and radio news. My choice was Kevin because he was witty and  handsome and would fit in with the world he'd cover. He got the assignment. Little did we know that this was our entry to a world that would consume us for decades to come. Our formal immersion in that world began for me a couple  of years later, when I joined CBS as a TV news writer. Kevin was already there as a reporter. Within a year we both won CBS Fellowships to Columbia. Not to study journalism: Kevin pursued Asian studies and I chose Africa studies.
   Next it was back to CBS. Kevin soon left for the Peace Corps staff as an evaluator of Asian projects. I soon followed, drawn by the mystique of PC and the JFK administration. So on November 1, 1963 my family moved to the suburbs of DC. My office was next to Kevin's. Soon I took off for Somalia, my first evaluation. Overnighting in Nairobi, a knock on my door brought the news of Kennedy's death. The next day I flew to Somalia. The following  two years I evaluated eight programs, with reports that were as much as 100 pages, appreciated by Shriver, who valued criticism that kept the organization tough and fair.
    After those Evaluation days, Kevin and I weren't finished with the Peace Corps. He went to Thailand as director and I went to Kenya, along with Joan and our two boys, five and seven at the time. We stayed for two years.
    After PC we eventually wound up at ABC.  I had a hand in Kevin being hired at Saigon bureau chief, where he stayed until the city fell and he boarded a Marine helicopter to be ferried to a ship off shore. My last posting at ABC was senior producer of documentaries for ten years. From time to time Kevin was called upon to provide expert and seasoned support which  continued when I was head of Radio Free Asia and lived in DC.
    We were closer than ever then, thanks in part to the two Joans (our wives, of course). Kevin and I would take in a a Redskins game a couple of times each season. We alternated serving as New Year's Eve party hosts, Super Bowl games were always at Kevin and Joan's. We spent an occasional week end at the Kennan farm in Pennsylvania and on holiday in Martha's Vineyard.  Five years ago my wife and moved to the Seattle area and communication with Kevin and Joan has been mostly by email. 
    And finally our 60-year friendship has come to and end. And end that left me in tears, but with great memories of a fine man and a wonderful friendship.

Kevin gave me my start in journalism, 40 years ago at ABC in Washington. I'll never be able to adequately thank him for that opportunity. In the years that followed, he was never anything but supportive, friendly, and a wonderful man. RIP Kevin.

Kevin was a very old and loyal friend.He was an active member of the Geogetown community, and cared deely about his friends and neighbors. He was a fine reporter for ABC news  a member of the Peace Corps and a proud alumnae of Williams College where he was a star runner on the track team. My love and sympathy to his wife Joan who was there for Kevin every step of the way.
