She was the wife of the late Robert “Bobby” Abbo, Jr. to whom she was married for 26 years. Born in Brighton Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Janet McGrath (Hailer) and the late Cornelius D. McGrath, Jr.
She graduated from Newton College of the Sacred Heart and held an MA in Early Childhood Education from the University of New Hampshire and an MA in Conflict Resolution from George Mason University.
Professionally, she worked in early childhood education, was a mediator in conflict resolution and a facilitator with the Head Start program. In retirement, Marcia volunteered her time teaching literary skills to elementary age students and continued to develop her own skills in golf and tennis which she enjoyed in Florida and at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Marcia and her husband, Bobby (including his Poor Robert’s Foundation), were philanthropists dedicated to improving life for many throughout Washington.
Survivors include her mother, her sister, Sandy Huke and her husband Michael Huke of Rockville, Maryland; a brother, Robert McGrath of West Palm Beach, Florida; and a sister-in-law, Mirella Abbo Stanley of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Marcia had a large fan club of adoring nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and a network of friends who will deeply miss her.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, September 17th at Annunciation Catholic Church in Washington, DC. Visitation will be at 10:00AM followed by the Mass at 11:00AM. Her interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Roslindale, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 29th at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to Poor Robert’s Mission, Inc. (poorrobertsmission.org).
