Mary Sanker Candon

Peacefully, at home on Saturday, August 14, 2021. Survived by her children, MaryEva Candon, Marguerite Nealon (Kevin), Charles (LeeAnn), and Stephen (Doreen). Predeceased by son Tommy (1977), husband Dr. Charles V. Candon (1965) and husband, Barney Maloy (1996). Born February 13, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA, the 8th of 10 children to Albert J. and Eva Donoughe Sanker. Lived in Washington, DC since 1937. Graduate of Central High School '42, Georgetown University Nursing School, RN '45, Marymount College VA, BSN '81. Worked at Georgetown Hospital, Providence Hospital and Sibley Hospital. In retirement, remarkably active: two book clubs, Bible Study, Sodality, Christ Child Society, Meals on Wheels, Blood Pressures for the Elderly, film afficionado, Nats fan, charming hostess and celebrator of life.

Survived also by her 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren Moira Cahan (Patrick), Connor and Brody; Brigid Calamis (Nat), Jake, Molly and Kate; Kelly Elliott (Travis), Brendan, MaryClare and Kevin; Kathleen O'Donovan (Christopher), Shannon and Grady. Shawn Candon (Sharron), Joshua and Rachel; Joshua Candon (Valentina). Brendan, John (Alex), Pat, Joey, and Julia Candon. Also, survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces/nephews.

Mother, Mom, Grandma, GG, Aunt Mary, Mary was the matriarch of the Candon and Sanker extended families. She will be remembered by all for her enthusiastic embrace of life, her welcoming home, her determination and curiosity, her unyielding love of her children through joy and loss, her charm and grace, her ready sense of humor, her beautiful smile and her sparkling eyes. She leaves a large space that we will attempt to fill with beautiful memories and emulation of her.

Mass of Celebration, Saturday, October 2, 11am, Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada St NW, off Chevy Chase Circle. Reception following at Mary's home. Burial Monday, October 4.
