Mary Catherine McCarthy English died on April 10, 2018. Born January 23, 1933 in Indianapolis to Frank J. McCarthy and Agnes Larmore McCarthy she attended St. Joan of Arc school in Indianapolis, and Nativity School and Immaculata High School in Washington. She graduated from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana in 1954.
During the 1950s Mrs. English worked as a speech-writer for U.S. Senators of both parties, and later did research and editorial work for the Georgetown Center for Strategic Studies (now CSIS). After serving as Editor-in-Chief for the Educational Research Council in Cleveland Mrs. English was hired in 1980 by the Reagan-Bush campaign. On January 20, 1981 she began working in the White House on media relations and served continuously in Administration positions through January 19, 1993. Her last job before retiring in 1995 was with the U.S. House of Representatives Republican Conference.
Mrs. English was married to Raymond English who died in 1990, and is survived by her daughter, Alice Anne English, and stepchildren Deborah Anne English and Anthony English; three grandchildren and one great grandson; three sisters and three brothers; and dozens of nieces and nephews. Her brother Frank E. McCarthy and sister Alice Donahue predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew Church, Bethesda at 10 A.M. on Tuesday, April 17, burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Aspen Hill. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Bartholomew Church, 6900 River Road, Bethesda, MD 20817.
