Maureen Margaret Carnathan

On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, Maureen Margaret (O’Connor) Carnathan, age 86, passed from this life in Bethesda, Md.

Maureen was born March 31, 1937, to Timothy Francis and Margaret (Arthur) O’Connor in Washington, DC. She was a proud third generation Washingtonian, growing up in Chevy Chase. Maureen attended Blessed Sacrament School and Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. In 1959, she was graduated from Trinity College with a bachelor’s degree in economics. After college, she taught third grade at Annunciation Catholic School on Massachusetts Avenue. Maureen married the love of her life, Dr. Robert “Bob” J. Carnathan on May 6, 1961, at Blessed Sacrament Church. They were about to celebrate 62 years of marriage. Maureen was an avid gardener and loved to play the piano. Maureen completed the Education for Parish Services program and was a lector for many years at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church.

Maureen was a devout Catholic, becoming a Daughter of St. Francis de Sales, and remained active supporting the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. Maureen served on the Parish Council at Our Lady of Mercy, and was an active member of the committee responsible for the current beautiful Church.

Maureen is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Robert J. Carnathan, her children Margaret, Robert “Bobby”, Michael (Nora), and Peter (Molly). She was predeceased by her son John. She is survived by thirteen grandchildren who knew her as “Nona,” Andrew, Connor, Ryann, Devin, Quinn, Griffin, Michelle, Michael “Mikey,” Christopher (Maddie), Grace, Brendan, Declan, and Ella, and two great grandchildren Liam and Jacqueline. She is survived by her sister Mary Frances (O’Connor) Moriarty and brother and sister-in-law, Kathleen (Carnathan) and Harold Nightingale, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 11am.
