Tuleda Johnson - I have known Michael most of my life since grade school. I have always liked him as a friend and at times we did hang out together. I do consider myself close to him and knowing that I had lost one of my best friends was a lot to deal with. In fact the whole family was close. I say a prayer often to my best friend and wishing that he watch over us all. Michael we miss you very much. I lost a true and dear friend. You are in my prayers and in my heart. Love you my brother and my friend.

Coming up on three years in May. Still unreal. Thinking about you all the time, Mike. Hope you can see the house from where you are. It turned out beautifully. Mrs. Johnson., when I went for info on Jim to photograph my grandchildren, I did not realize that Jim and Mike had passed. We knew each other in college.  Both of them were great people.

It's so hard to believe that you've been physically gone for a bit over two years now. So much has happened during those two years, including the passing of Jim, and not a day goes by when I don't think about you. I hope that you know this, but as promised, I am having our home finished, and I want it to honor you and the way you always strived for excellence in everything that you did. I know that you will keep the contractors on their toes and make sure every measurement is correct! LOL! I miss you so much, but am moving forward moment by moment, day by day, living my life the best way that I can without you being here as a physical being. Your spirit is always with me.

So many shared good times and memories. I can't tell you how many times we think of Michael as the person to share an experience or to help solve a current problem. We think of him often and the many good times the four of us have shared. We loved you both and still do.

Tuleda, I think of Michael often and so miss his warm smile and wonderful disposition.  I am so very grateful to have spent time with you two over the years at Joey and Alvin's house in DC and the Woods, and have such fond memories of our trip to Italy in 2008. Dear Tuleda, When we remember Mike in conversation, we recall hearing Mike's voice and seeing his expressions and smiles.  Mike was steady and predictable yet he was creative and had a zest for even the smallest details.  He was loyal, respectful, and had a good disposition.  He was the friend most people would hope to have as a friend. We were blessed to have him as family too.  He loved being married to you.  He and his mom and brother got along so well. I will always cherish my memories of Michael.  He was an amazing neighbor and friend, and I saw for myself his  unquestionable devotion to you.  Among my fondest memories are the times I invited myself over to hang out with you and Michael on your porch,  or just to chat over coffee on a Saturday morning (mostly about politics).  I marveled at Michael's obsession with getting every detail of the renovation just right.  Michael was kind to my son, and took the time to know him.  I will always be grateful for the help Michael was always willing to offer, and I feel blessed to have known him.  God Bless.

Tireless, undaunted, unwavering in his love for you, Tuleda, those are just some of the words that will always come to mind whenever I think of my friend, Michael, in years to come. An exceptional man, he was, and always will be in my mind, a spirit, a spirit in whom I saw no ill will for anyone, only an abiding hope that people would be the best they could be.

I will always remember Michael and  the good times we had, laughing, eating crabs, Michael enjoyed good food, and the long conversations about cooking, remodeling, and organizing things...he was the perfectionist!  You two were a loving couple.  Michael's warm loving spirit and smile will be missed.  Please know Tuleda, I will be there for you.

Tuleda, Mike was a bright light in a sometimes dark world. We will miss his presence but we will cherish his memory and we'll never forget that Michael Johnson smile. We were blessed to have known him. We'll keep you in our prayers.

Mike was a unique individual – graphic designer, office machinery technician, public information officer, and most of all, a valued friend to every Office of Planning employee.   For 10 consecutive years his touch provided a top notch professional look for the District of Columbia Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation. Signage, web design, logos and programs all were uniquely Mike's design.  He also designed, and produced, the printed certificates we've handed out to over 150 projects – a classy product incorporating  L'Enfant original map “Plan for the City of Washington,” and the Stars and Bars.    

He attended every program until this year, yet continued his work for the awards program right up until the very end. In fact on his last day (and evening) in the office, Friday, May 3, he printed and mounted the large sponsor signs for the May 6 program.  Several years running, he also worked in the control booth operating sound and the PowerPoint program. 


But he did more than that. He was constantly offering suggestions of ways to improve the graphics  and content for Planning Office publications and products.  He also produced many of these “in house” to save the District government funds.  Recently, for example, he produced over two dozen copies of the draft DC Historic Preservation Plan, a 90-page full color production, presenting each with a nice comb-bound finish – a nice professional touch.

As public information officer, he took his responsibilities very seriously. He researched, in great detail, every inquiry gathering all of the information together before presenting it to the person who presented the request. And, to minimize the cost to the public, he created large PDF files of the assembled material, rather than charging a fee for print copy production.

I find myself at a loss of how this office will maintain the quality, quantity, and professionalism  we've grown accustomed to expect without Mike unique talents, energy, and contributions.      

Dear Tuleda, Jim and family, my most sincere condolences on the loss of your beloved Mike. We, likewise, miss our dear, dear friend and shall always cherish the times we shared together.

The last time I saw your husband, at your father's funeral, my thought in walking out of the church was "Boy, that Michael is such a nice man." He just radiated warmth somehow. Hope he is having a wonderful time in heaven and saves a good spot for the rest of us.

I always knew my uncle Mike as a jovial guy who loved exotic foods and travel destinations. We will all miss his humble presence and have memories of his stories at family cookouts. This candle burns in your honor.

On or around the time of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I met Mike.

On May 13th 2013, I visited Mike at the INOVA hospital. We had a great time talking about the past and the future.  But the most important event that happened was I got a chance to pray for my best friend and I told him I loved him.  

On May 15th I returned to the hospital and saw Tuleda and her cousin, we had a great fellowship during that stay but because of my allergy I did not stay long. During that stay Mike told me about his trip to Scotland and traveling with Tuleda. 

On May 16th I received a call from a number that I did not recognize.  Mike had passed.  

Mike was my best friend.

We met at Wilson HS.

We ran track together.

On Sunday mornings Mike would show up in his green VW and we would take trips to then Shenandoah Mountains,  Ocean City or where ever we would up.  Mike like to drive and loved to talk. Mike taught me how to drive a stick shift.

When Mike met Tuleda, that was all he would talk about.  She became the love of his life.

Tuleda, know this, you ARE the love of his life.

Words could never express the degree of sympathy we have for you, Tuleda, my dear sweet cousin, over the passing of Michael whom you truly loved and who loved you dearly.  You will always be in our thoughts and prayers.  I remember telling you that everything would be all right at Uncle Paul's funeral and that time would heal your broken heart.  I cannot relate to this loss, however I do know for sure that no matter how hard things seem, God is forever by your side, and we pray that you will lean on him always to get you through this loss and anything you may encounter in life. Please feel free to call me at any time, day or night, if you want to talk to someone other than your loving sisters and friends you are so truly blessed to have in your life. I did not know Michael as well as some of the others that have written in his guest book.  From some of the readings that I have read he was a very loveable and intelligent individual and you had one of God's special angels just like I did.  I can only say to you that you have a long road ahead of you because you have lost your soul mate, friend and lover. I send to you my deepest sympathy and heartful love. If, ever you need to talk I am here for you with love, help and understand.  Believe me there will be those times when you want to talk and have someone who understands your pain and feelings. My uncle mike had an encyclopedic mind. He knew the most intricate and exhaustive details of everything from dry wall to military air craft.  And if you knew him, you know he certainly  wasnt afraid to impart this knowledge.  Ask him a question and you might find yourself still nodding cordially a good ten or twenty minutes later.  But my uncles verbosity personified the energy and love in his character and spirit.  He didnt just want you to hear, he wanted you to learn and grow. And he taught with love.  My earliest memories of my uncle were of him teaching me to play computer flight simulators of fighter jets and apache helicopters.  These lessons conveyed not only the importance of nuance and particularity, but also an urgency to pursue  mastery over a single subject.  He was so patient and invested.   My dad would have to drag me away kicking and screaming each time.   Now my uncle mike looks down on even the highest flying jet.  Watching us all.  Waiting to first enlighten us and then  bore us to tears about the majesties of heaven.

I retired from the Office of Planning ten years ago, but I never forgot Michael's calm, good-natured ways and his sense of humor.  He was unflappable even during chaotic times in the office, and in spite of the constant demands made on him.  I especially enjoyed talking to Mike about our shared interest and love of cats.  The world would be a better place if it had more people like him.  May his memory be a blessing.
