Michael Javier Ribera

Michael was born in New York City on November 25, 1962, to José Ramón Ribera Garbayo and Ana María Segura Zurbano while his father was completing his surgical residency. At the age of three, his family returned to their beloved hometown of San Sebastián, Spain, where Michael grew up and attended The English School of San Sebastián before continuing his education at Colegio de San Ignacio de Loyola (Jesuitas de San Sebastián).

Michael returned to the United States to study, graduating from Boston College in 1984 and earning his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1989. He completed a General Practice Residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital in 1990 before receiving both his Certificate in Endodontics and Master of Science degree from Northwestern University Dental School in Chicago in 1992.

Throughout his distinguished career, Michael was deeply committed to excellence in his profession. He was a member of the District of Columbia Dental Society, a specialist member of the American Association of Endodontists, a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, a member of the Endodontic College of Diplomates, and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. In 2006, he was honored with the District of Columbia Dental Society's David Mast Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to continuing education. He joined Advanced Endodontic Associates in Washington, D.C., as a partner in 1992, where he remained for more than three decades.

Michael was respected and admired throughout the Endodontic community - not only across the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, but throughout the United States and around the world. While he was an exceptional clinician, he will be remembered just as much for his passion for teaching. He devoted countless hours outside of his practice to educating dental students and fellow professionals, generously sharing his knowledge, clinical expertise, and unwavering enthusiasm for advancing the field of Endodontics. His lectures, mentorship, and dedication inspired generations of clinicians and left an enduring mark on the profession he loved.

Yet Michael's greatest legacy extends far beyond dentistry. Whether as a husband, father, son, brother, mentor, friend, endodontist, or teacher, he had an extraordinary gift for making people feel valued. He celebrated the successes of others, encouraged them through challenges, and never missed an opportunity to tell someone how proud he was of them. His kindness, generosity, humility, and genuine interest in others touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Outside of his professional life, Michael's greatest joy was his family. Nothing meant more to him than spending time with those he loved and supporting them through every stage of life. Above all, he cherished every moment - both the extraordinary and the everyday - with his beloved wife, Kimberly, whom he adored and described as his very best friend. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on love, laughter, and family. Creating that life together and watching their family grow was Michael's greatest accomplishment and deepest source of pride.

As a devoted father, Michael was always present. When Brian and Nora were young, he proudly coached their soccer teams for many years, treasured driving them to school each morning, and began teaching them to play golf as soon as they could walk. During Brian's years of playing ice hockey, Michael never missed the 4:00 a.m. practices before school, happily sacrificing sleep to cheer him on and support his passion. It was in these everyday acts of love and unwavering presence that Michael's devotion as a father shone brightest.

As Brian and Nora grew older and their lives took them around the world, Michael remained just as present. He traveled frequently to visit Brian in High Point, North Carolina, and Nora in Madrid, Milan, New York, and later Florence. It was not uncommon for him to plan multiple weekend trips to Europe in a single year to spend time with Nora or help her through one of her international moves. For Michael, no distance was ever too great if it meant being with the people he loved.

Michael also returned several times each year to San Sebastián, Spain - his favorite place in the world - to spend time with his parents, sisters, nieces, and nephews. His love for his hometown, its people, and the memories it held remained a constant throughout his life. Michael had an extraordinary zest for life and believed there was always something to celebrate. He had a remarkable way of turning ordinary moments into cherished memories and making everyone around him feel special.

Michael is survived by his beloved mother, Ana María Segura Zurbano; his devoted wife, Kimberly Ribera; his sisters, Diana Ribera, Sara Ribera, and Adriana Ribera; his cherished children, Brian Ribera and Nora Ribera Giannarelli; his son-in-law James Giannarelli; and his many nieces and nephews, who brought immeasurable joy, laughter, and light to his life. He was preceded in death by his father, José Ramón Ribera Garbayo.

Two Memorial Masses will be celebrated in loving memory of Michael Javier Ribera.
