NICOLE HAMON
(September 21, 1952 – November 19, 2018)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nicole Hamon, on November 19, 2018 in Washington, D.C. She is survived by her sister Odette Hamon in the island of La Réunion, France, cousins in France and New York City and many friends.
Nicole was born near Paris and spent a lot of time in Brittany where her family came from. She studied English and German in Paris (France), Lafayette (Louisiana) and Washington D.C. Following her graduate studies, she worked at the World Bank as Program Assistant for the Human Development Department from February 1991 to September 2014, when she retired.
Nicole was truly passionate about development and Africa. Colleagues in the Africa region remember “competing” to have her as part of their teams, because she was such an asset, so experienced, a strong personality with a good sense of humor. She was always available, even beyond the call of duty.
Beyond her strong commitment to work, Nicole had a heart of gold, she was like a mother, a sister, and a faithful friend. She was supportive of junior staff in country offices, mentoring them while contributing to critical delivery of projects and also taking the time to introduce them to the art of Tai chi after attending classes at the Bank. During all these years Nicole established lasting friendships she cherished and valued, they became her extended family.
Nicole was a spiritual, compassionate and kind person, an active member of several church communities in D.C., attending services in French, German or English. She served in several soup kitchens in the D.C. area. After her retirement, Nicole enjoyed traveling to France and Germany to meet up with friends, to visit with her sister in La Reunion and her cousins.
A memorial service for Nicole was held on December 14, 2018 at the French Catholic Church of Washington and another mass will be held at a later date in Britany where she will be laid to rest with her parents.
