PHILIP S. DAY

Philip S. Day of Naples, Florida, Chevy Chase, Maryland and Castine, Maine, died unexpectedly on November 21, 2012. He is predeceased by his parents Joseph P. Day, Pauline L. Day, his sister Mary Anne Knuble and his brother Joseph P. Day, Jr. He is survived by his siblings Barbara Ann Murphy (Naples, Florida), James M. Day and his wife Leila B. Day (Castine, Maine) and Dennis O. Day (Trenton, Maine). He was born October 5, 1933 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine in 1955 and received his law degree from St. Mary's University School of Law, San Antonio, Texas. Over a period of 5 years he travelled throughout Europe attending the Universities of Heidelberg, Madrid and the Sorbonne in Paris studying languages and comparative law. Returning to the United States in 1964 he worked for IBM and for the international law firm, Baker and MacKenzie in Washington, DC. In 1968 he began his own law practice in Washington DC, retiring in 1993. He loved to travel and did so extensively. Tennis was a passion and through the sport he made many lasting friendships. Philip will always be remembered by his smile and his wonderful laugh and he could liven any conversation through the use of one of the 4 languages he spoke fluently. He had a very strong bond to each of his siblings and cousins and always carried with him those life lessons learned in South Brewer, Maine. For those who wish to make donations, the family suggests that donations be made in Philip's name to a chapter of the American Cancer Society in your area. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at Joseph Gawler & Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Avenue NW Washington, DC on Thursday, November 29, 2012. Interment will be in Maine with a memorial service to be held early summer 2013 in Castine, Maine.

I saw him last at Kenwood C.C. this spring, as I was watching my daughter Heather play an inter-club match. He had just finished playing and ambled over to the viewing area and flashed his usual dazzling smile and kind greetings. He watched Heather for a moment and said what a fine player she was and how he had seen her as a youngster on up through the ranks. We promised to hit some soon. Alas, it won't happen. Gone much too early. As others have said here, he brightened our lives with his positive attitude and colorful stories of a life fully lived.

Phil, you were one of the really fun people on bar association jaunts. I doubt that a replacement will be found.

Phil, you provided fierce competition as well as fond memories at the Volta Place Playground - tennis, touch football, softball, frisbee, and grey matter exercises. For the past six or eight years, during your Washington chapters and when you read your newspaper with your breakfast at the River Road McDee's, you and your conversations seemed to doubled the customer count. Having known you for some forty-seven years, you may know this, and yet I'll say it again; You positively brighten the life of every person you interact with, and you always have. We all have no doubt that you'll keep on spreading cheer in your new venue. Slainte until we meet again.

I was so shocked to hear of the passing of Phil. In Bethesda, we waited for his return from Florida every year, and from Maine after his vacation time there. He was humble, handsome and always happy to see us as we were to see him. I loved spending time with him. He will be missed so very much. My heart and prayers go out to his close family and loved ones.

We'd like to extend our sincere condolences and hugs to the Day family, especially Uncle Jim and Aunt Leila, Barbara, Dennis and the rest of the grieving family. May you find the comfort, courage and strength as you go through this painful time. Philip will be missed but not forgotten--his gregarious, compassionate and generous spirit will linger and live through his loved ones. He was remarkable, talented, and truly respectable, personally and professionally, who touched a vast number of lives and changed them to the better. Rest in peace, Philip. The Omran/Itani family.

Howard and I were so sorry to hear the terribly sad news about Phil. We so looked forward to seeing him on the tennis courts or at cocktail parties during our summers in Castine. He was always entertaining and a true gentleman. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Day family during this most difficult time.
