

Rachel Mandis, born in Hampshire County, West Virginia, passed peacefully away in her sleep on September 10, 2017.
Graveside service is at 11:00 AM on October 9, 2017 at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Bladensburg, Maryland.
Born to Nora Sine Deaver and Howell “Brother” Deaver, Rachel traveled to Washington, DC after her high school graduation. In the aftermath of World War II she arrived in the Nation’s Capital and was employed by the United States Information Agency. Her 39-year career with the Federal government also included executive level positions with the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Rachel was married to Stephen Harry Mandis on July 7, 1957. After her husband’s death, October 3, 1982, and her retirement, Rachel lived a serene and charmed life. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Catina Mandis-Wist and Royce Wist. Her loving nature and constant devotion to Catina and Royce’s two children, Christina and Stephen was a daily blessing. She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Demetra Mandis, grandchildren Nicole and Thomas, their children, Morgan, Stephen, Madison, Sophia, Katherine, Thomas, Caleb and Ryan. Rachel will also be forever remembered by her extended family. She was adored by her family as she adored them.
She was an elegant, soft-spoken woman. Her indelible mark in life was her quiet strength. She was kind, compassionate, and humble; her sweet and simple nature was obvious to all. Rachel left her legacy of love to her children, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, and all friends and neighbors. She will be missed every day.
