Dear Aunt Doie & Family:

It is with great sadness that we received news of Uncle Dick's passing.  The friendship you shared with our parents, Aunt Doie - Dave and Ruth Wehmeyer  - beginning in high school (Grosse Pointe South) through college (University of MI), marriage, families, cross-country and around the world moves, retirement and grandchildren - was quite extraordinary.   I always think of Dick - or "Uncle Dick" as we called him - as a brilliant, humble and kind man who despite his many accomplishments and service to our country was always one to listen first and speak second.  I learned a lot from Uncle Dick during the time I spent with him in South Caroline.  My only regret, Aunt Doie, is that in raising our own family in Michigan, I was unable to visit with you and Uncle Dick in Washington  following the passing of our parents.  However, I want you to know that we hold Dick in our hearts, where he lives on with many fond memories.  Aunt Doie, we are thinking of you at this very difficult time - and of course the entire Bender Family.  With thankful hearts for the years of friendship you shared with our parents, we send hugs and our love to you all -- and most of all, prayers for God's peace. Richard - and Delores - were good friends to my parents, John and Alzira Hill when we all lived in Maryland in 1955-1961   When we often visited, we (Teresa and Clayton) would play with Diane and John.  Delores would take care of us after school while Mom was in the hospital when sister Catherine was born.   I remember Richard as a light and loving gentleman who adored his family above all.   Our parents kept in contact via Christmas cards through the years after we moved to Virginia.  It was always a pleasure to be together, and I always looked forward to reading the Christmas card.   Heartfelt condolences to all.
