Richard “Dick” Schmidt passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at the age of 74 surrounded by loving family and friends. A Washington, DC native, he graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School and the University of Maryland where he played on the varsity golf team. After graduating, Dick worked as a financial advisor for over 40 years at firms Johnston, Lemon & Co. and Janney Montgomery Scott. Dick was an avid golfer and lifelong member of Kenwood Golf and Country Club. He competed in a multitude of local and national tournaments over the course of his life with great success.
Dick was predeceased by his parents, William and Charlotte Schmidt, his first wife, Jo Anne Schmidt and his second wife of 26 years, Valerie Cestone Schmidt. He is survived by his stepson Michael Mesmer (Courtney), brother Billy Schmidt (Mary), his companion, Joan Curtis, and his wonderful extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday, December 20, 2018 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Gawler’s Funeral home, 5130 Wisconsin Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20016. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Gawler’s Funeral home. Reception to follow at Manor Country Club, 14901 Carrolton Road, Rockville, MD 20853 starting at 1 p.m.
The family would like to thank the medical team at Georgetown Hospital Center for caring for Dick during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick’s memory may be made to Medstar Georgetown University Hospital Lombardi Cancer Center.
