Susan is survived by her husband, Rick Silverman, and children, Laurie Silverman Flynn and Tim Silverman.
Susan was born on April 13, 1945 in Hagerstown, MD to Fred and Vivian Mowen. She graduated from Wittenberg University in 1967 with a degree in English and moved to New York City to write for the Ladies Home Journal. In March of 1968, Susan married Rick, who she had met in the summer of 1966 while working in a restaurant in Ocean City, MD, serving coffee to Rick, a police officer at the time. Susan and Rick welcomed Laurie into their home in October of 1972 and Tim in December of 1975.
Susan’s children remember her as a strong, caring, and devoted mother and wife who attended religiously every swim meet, soccer match, school play and piano recital; taught the power of communicating clearly and from the heart; loved their father deeply; and would travel tens of thousands of miles to be at their side when in need, no matter their age.
Susan was passionate about educating and protecting children. After taking graduate-level courses in education at the University of Maryland, she taught elementary school children with special needs; served as the Co-Legislative Director at the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth, which sought to prevent adolescent drug abuse; and worked in the school outreach program at the National Archives, traveling to local DC area schools to educate children on key documents central to American history.
Susan also loved the arts and travel. She was an avid watcher (and hummer) of show tunes, created beautiful floral arrangements using dried plants, kept an immaculate garden, became an avid painter, and compiled detailed travelogues of her trips around the world with her husband, children, and grandchildren that captured their adventures in picture and in word.
Friends are invited to gather on Thursday July 27 at 10:00am at Joseph Gawler's Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016; a reception will follow at the same location. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Susan’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
