December 22, 1946October 5, 2019

William Lester Eldred, 72, of Washington, D.C., passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2019. Born on December 22, 1946, in Terre Haute, Indiana, William “Bill” was loved by many across the country. Bill was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and North Western University. Immediately following graduation from North Western University, he became a Navy officer, proudly serving his country for twenty years, achieving the rank of Commander.

Bill was an avid roller coaster fanatic. He, along with his husband, Frank, traveled the world with other like-minded enthusiasts that were able to gain access to all the inside workings of many different roller coasters and parks worldwide. When he wasn’t planning the next adventure, Bill enjoyed spending quiet moments at home with his husband and their two Havanese dogs, Rufus and Chumley.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Mabel E. and William M. Eldred. He is survived by his husband, Frank J. Wellner, and his children Meg G. Eldred (William Barcus) and Morgen W. Eldred (Jackie). He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Angel Chege, Charles Madjeski, Shannon Madjeski, Kieren Eldred, Jasmine Barcus, Brandon Barcus, and Dakota Barcus. His ex-wife, Barbara Eldred and many cousins and close friends also brought joy to his life.

A memorial service will be held at National City Christian Church, 5 Thomas Circle NW, Washington, DC 20005 on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 1:00 PM. William’s final resting place will be at the Church by the Sea in Madeira Beach, Florida, where there will be a private interment ceremony. We shared many things. Northwestern, NROTC, Alpha Tau Omega, and many more happy memories. So grateful to have seen him in San Antonio several years ago. Smooth sailing Bill. You are missed.

I have so many sweet memories of Bill and Frank ... starting in about 1990. I remember when Bill still had his place (was it on Thomas Circle?) before they moved to the Cairo building. The garden was great and I got a lot of plants and planters when they moved. I still have the concrete camel table stand - it has moved to 3 countries with me!
One of my fondest memories is the extravagant party that Bill and Frank threw for me when I moved to Egypt. I have never been honored with quite such an amazing gesture.
I will always remember Bill with a big smile and always so happy to spend time together. Although we didn't see one another often, I always consider Bill and Frank among my dearest friends.
My heart is breaking as I learn of Bill's passing .... but memories of his sweet self will never be forgotten. Much love, Cynthia

Bill, was a wonderful and helpful coworker. He was a brother Naval Officer and we shared many memories of our service experiences. Bill was always there for you. He was Jan's supervisor and she always had great things to say about him. Bill will be sorely missed, but his friendly smile and wonderful memories will never be forgotten. Rest in peace shipmate.

I really enjoyed our time, Meg and I, with you and Frank. You were so much fun to be around; such a cool dad!! I REALLY enjoyed the Black and White party at the club. The world lost a very good man.

I met Bill & Frank in a hotel bar one night in Spain during an American Coaster Enthusiasts trip We hit it off right away. My husband, Bob, and I hung out with them at the remaining parks and evenings in Madrid. Bill was such fun to be around. Our condolences to Frank.
