
Died peacefully on November 22, 2011 at his home with his family by his side. David was born in Ottawa, Canada in 1927. He was a prominent agricultural economist respected worldwide for his significant contributions to international development. He completed his Ph.D. at Cornell University and taught at Guelph University and the University of Chicago. Doing graduate work in rural India in the 1950's, David developed a passion for improving opportunities for economic growth through focused use of science and technology. He sustained his love for South Asian countries and their cultures throughout his life. He served as the first President of the International Development and Research Center in Ottawa, Canada and the World Bank's Vice President for South Asia and Senior Vice President for Policy Planning and Research. He served on the board of directors of several organizations including the Rockefeller Foundation. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ruth; daughter Ann Fraser; son Ian Hopper; grandchildren Samuel and Sandra and four step-children. A private memorial service will be held. A celebration of his life is planned for friends and colleagues at a later date. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
