Andrew Mangold was a gentle soul. I met him through Melody Nelson in my London days in the early aughts. We used to go to shows, and spend hours hanging in his flat with the half-moon window looking out onto the lamplit street. 

This picture was taken in about 2009 in Brooklyn on the roof of my building. Over the next decade, I saw him when he was in New York and kept up with his music on Facebook. Nothing to Use was one of my favorite tracks to come out of the pandemic. 

We last exchanged messages a couple months before he died, but I only came across this page yesterday because I was telling a colleague a story about Andrew and his brother.  I last wrote him in May of this year to tell him I really loved his tunes and that I had some of my own to share. I now know the message was quite late. 

Andrew, I'm sorry I didn't say goodbye. You mattered in my life. Thank you for making art. Doing something, saying something, making something, singing something, writing it down. Thank you for not being afraid, and for going your own way. May you know peace. You are remembered with love.

You were like a brother to me. Today a candle is burning for you in Vienna...

To continue from the last post. In the first pic above you can see you can see Andrew against the wall at an art exhibition of mine and my ex wife Kimi at the Old Street Foundry.  The second picture is a birthday gift I created for Andrew 11 years ago, and I also wrote short story featuring him as the central character which he loved. Hopefully I can find it again. Andrew was a good man whom I genuinely liked. 

May his soul be bound in the bundle of the living.

Heartbreaking to find out like this. My name is Josef Holtzkaner but Andrew knew me as my artist name Kapi. I met Andrew in London around 2006, where we played on the same stage in the Purple Turtle club in Camden. The guitarist in my band didn’t have his amp, and Andrew was generous enough to offer us his equipment. At the end of the show I showed my appreciation to Andrew and he answered with his signature zen American accent “no worries man, I’m glad I gave it to you because you played real rock and roll” . I was deeply impressed by his kindness, because in London the music scene is pretty hostile and there is not much comradeship between bands. I’m from Israel and Andrew mentioned to me that he’s an American Jew and we became good friends from that point. During his stay in London I went to see his band several times, and he was also a regular at my shows at the Rhythm Factory. I remember v well the shows he played at the 333 club in Hoxton. I also used visit him often at his dalston flat, and there we would sit for hours and talk about anything and everything. Once we even tried to create an experimental artistic advertisement for American Apparel. At a certain point he left london for (I think) Austria and we kept in touch via Facebook for many years, our conversation would span hours covering everything from culture, politics, history, philosophy and social sciences. I felt that we were bouncing off each other naturally, and I appreciated his intelligence and sense of humour and I could also feel his pain. You will find three pictures with this message.  The one with Andrew on the microphone is from a night in Tommy Flinz which was a iconic club in Camden,  and Andrew joined my band as a singer. Another picture is a Hunnakah party I hosted at my friends house, Andrew is in the back against the wall next to my ex wife’s (Kimi) painting, to his right is fellow Jewish American musician David Roback of Mazzy Star who passed away a few years ago.

My sincere sympathy to you, Sylvia, and to your family.  
For years, I've been following you and your sons' successes, mostly via our Aunt Nataline.  Sadly, she and all of that generation have now passed away... but both you and our cousin Erwin have lost a comparatively young child.  
You have created two talented children... may Andrew's "memory be as a blessing", as our grandparents would have said.  Your mother and many of your father's siblings lived long lives, but we are losing too many much too young.  How very sad for you.
