Dock Benjamin (Bennett) Swain passed away September 30, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, NY. Bennett was born on June 21, 1944 in Appomattox, Virginia to the late Benjamin William and Annie Clara (Humbles) Swain. Bennett was baptized into the Baptist faith tradition at an early age. He spent his early years growing up in the South and then in Mt. Vernon, New York. He attended Mt. Vernon’s public schools.
Bennett worked as a mechanic for Ford Motor Company and then for the Imperial Mitchell Dairy (later Country Delight). He was a proud dairy delivery man and Teamster for over forty years. He also was an active church member, including being on the Deacon Board at St. John’s AME Church in Harlem, New York.
Bennett married the late Diana Yolanda Smith in 1974 and to this union was born three children: Dale, Diana, and David. He married the late Jane Frances Gibson Murdock in 1989. The couple adopted a son- Troy Swain.
Bennett is survived by his four children Dale Bennett Swain, Diana Angelica (Swain) King, David Deval Swain and Troy Swain (Washingtonville, NY); his nine grandchildren Zilah Swain, Zyona Swain, Marcus King , Mario King, Devante Swain, Aliyah Swain, Deavion Swain, Alayasia Swain and Timmy Hill; his two sisters Arlene (Paul) Vincent (Bronx, NY) and Annette (Walter) Dixon (Mt. Vernon, NY); his two brothers Andrew Swain (Mt. Vernon, NY) and David Swain (Madison Heights, VA); his two stepchildren- Rhonda Murdock (Beacon, NY ) and Michael Murdock (Mt. Vernon, NY); his sister- in- law Carol (Cedric) Foster, (Carmel, NY), and a hosts of cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Annie Swain and his late wives Diana (Smith) Swain and Jane (Gibson Murdock) Swain.
Bennett’s family will greatly miss his sense of humor, his wisdom, and his cooking.
Arrangements are under the care of David T. Ferguson Funeral Home in Washingtonville, NY. Family and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home at 6PM on October 16, 2020, before the memorial service at 7PM. A private burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newburgh, NY will take place at a later date.
